RenderHogs

renderhogs script

Download RenderHogs v1.11 for After Effects on Windows and Mac, a powerful optimization script that makes heavy compositions more responsive by temporarily disabling resource-intensive layers and effects until render time . This essential tool lets you mark problematic elements as “render hogs,” then toggle them on and off with a single click—allowing you to work smoothly during production and automatically restore full quality when rendering .

Key Features of RenderHogs v1.11:

  • One-Click Toggle: Enable or disable all tagged render hogs throughout your entire project instantly—substitute layers do the opposite, serving as lightweight stand-ins while hogs are disabled
  • Smart Tagging System: Mark resource-intensive layers and effects as hogs, and tag alternative elements as substitutes that automatically appear when hogs are turned off
  • Value Reduction Expressions: Generate special expressions that reduce property values to a specified percentage when hogs are disabled—perfect for particle emitters (reducing 100,000 particles to 20,000) while maintaining keyframe integrity
  • Value Substitution: Replace property values completely with alternatives when hogs are disabled—for example, switching Radial Blur anti-aliasing from “High” to “Low” to keep comps responsive
  • Visual Indicator: Generate a composition layer that alerts you when render hogs are disabled, preventing accidental renders missing essential elements
  • QueueMaster Integration: Works seamlessly with QueueMaster script for automated rendering—automatically enable all hogs and disable substitutes during batch renders
  • Toggle & Render Command: Instantly enable all render hogs and begin rendering with one click
  • Customizable Scope: Choose whether toggling affects entire project, selected compositions, or current comp only—with options to affect precomps and locked layers
  • v1.11 Update (April 6, 2020): Fixed bug related to ‘Toggle & Render’ button functionality

Perfect For:

  • Motion graphics artists working with complex, particle-heavy compositions
  • VFX designers needing to maintain smooth playback during production
  • Anyone who’s ever waited for slow previews on resource-intensive projects
  • Studios wanting to optimize workflow without sacrificing final render quality
  • Animators working with heavy effects that need temporary disabling during editing

System Requirements:

  • Adobe After Effects 2020, CC 2019, CC 2018, CC 2017, CC 2015.3, CC 2015, CC 2014, CC, CS6
  • Windows 10/11 (64-bit) or macOS
  • 4GB RAM minimum (8GB+ recommended)
  • 25MB available disk space

Disable unnecessary layers and effects until render time. Includes tools for maintaining responsiveness in heavy comps.

RenderHogs aims to make heavy comps more responsive by disabling any unecessary layers/effects until render time. This is achieved by allowing you to tag resource intensive layers and effects in your comp. They can be toggled on/off at the click of a button, and you can also tag substitute layers/effects that serve as stand-ins while the hogs have been disabled. In addition to tagging layers/effects, RenderHogs can setup special expressions that alter the value of any keyframeable property based on whether the hogs are enabled or disabled.

Features

Toggle Hogs and Substitutes
Enable and disable all tagged render hogs instantly throughout your entire After Effects project with a single click. Any layers/effects tagged as substitutes will do the opposite, allowing them to serve as stand-ins for the layers/effects that were marked as hogs.

Tag Hogs and Substitutes
The tag buttons allow you to mark hogs and substitutes as well as remove any existing tags from layers/effects. The tag buttons are context sensitive.

Make Indicator
RenderHogs can generate a layer that acts as a visual indicator in your composition, alerting you when the render hogs have been disabled. This indicator acts as a safeguard agaist producing renders that are missing essential layers/effects.

Value Reduction
This command produces a special expression that takes the value of a selected property and reduces it down to a specified percentage. The big advantage in doing this is it allows you to still have some representation of your effect, rather than disabling it completely. One example of this would be if you have a particle emitter that is producing 100,000 particles per second. Using the Value Reduction command, you could reduce the value down to 20%, meaning the emitter would only produce 20,000 particles per second when the render hogs have been disabled. If keyframes are used, the Value Reduction expression will produce 20% of the keyframed value without actually affecting the original values of the keyframes.

Value Substitution
This is similar to the Value Reduction command in that it changes the value of a selected property based on if the hogs are enabled or disabled. Instead of reducing the value by a percentage, it allows you to specify a completely different value. An example of this would be if you had a Radial Blur effect, you could have the Antialiasing property set to “High” when the hogs are enabled. Upon disabling the hogs, you could have the value change to “Low” to help keep the comp more responsive.

Toggle & Render
This command allows you to instantly enable all render hogs and begin rendering.

QueueMaster Integration
If you’re using the QueueMaster script, it can automatically enable all hogs and disable all substitutes while automating renders. QueueMaster is a powerful way to automate the render queue in After Effects.

Individual Command Scripts
RenderHogs includes a collection of mini-scripts that provide the ability to execute certain commands via launcher scripts. Mac OS users can even assign hot-keys via the Keyboard preference pane in the system preferences.

Preferences/Customization
• Customize characters used for hog and substitute tags
• Specify the scope when toggling hogs: Entire Project, Selected Comps in Project Manager, Current Comp
• Affect precomps when toggling
• Affect locked layers when toggling
• Disable hogs after executing Toggle & Render
• Add hog/substitute tags to beginning or end of layer/effect name
• Show/hide help tips when mousing over controls
