BAO Bones for After Effects
BAO Bones v1.6.0 for After Effects
The Ultimate Fast and Flexible IK Rigging Plugin for Character Animation
Download BAO Bones v1.6.0 today. Consequently, you can set up and animate inverse kinematics (IK) rigs in After Effects with as few as three clicks, dramatically accelerating your character animation workflow. Because motion designers and animators frequently need to create expressive, natural character movement without the complexity of traditional rigging, having access to an efficient, powerful tool is absolutely essential. Nevertheless, many other IK rigging tools rely on After Effects’ built-in Puppet Tool for distortions, which uses an automatic mesh that you cannot define or modify over time, often resulting in artifacts and limited control. Fortunately, BAO Bones eliminates this bottleneck completely. Moreover, this native plugin offers a unique approach to character rigging, providing superior distortion quality, GPU-accelerated performance, and exceptional workflow simplicity. In short, you can rig and animate characters with unprecedented speed, flexibility, and smooth results.
Revolutionary Mesh-Based Distortion Engine
The core strength of this plugin lies in its advanced distortion technology. For instance, unlike tools that rely on After Effects’ Puppet Tool, BAO Bones uses a defined mesh that fits joint bending perfectly. Furthermore, you can modify this mesh whenever you want, ensuring your distortions remain accurate throughout your animation. Additionally, you can even use masks to achieve ultra-smooth skinning without artifacts, providing unparalleled control over the deformation quality. Since the plugin works with PNG layers without causing distortion or blurring, you can rig both vector and raster artwork with confidence. Consequently, your character animations will feature smooth, natural joint bending without the “mushy” artifacts common with other tools.
Streamlined Workflow and Intuitive Controls
Professional animators value tools that get out of the way and let them focus on performance. Therefore, BAO Bones is designed for speed and simplicity. For instance, you can control an entire character on a single layer without requiring extra nulls or controllers. Furthermore, the plugin offers an entirely keyframeable workflow, allowing you to switch IK mode from Automatic to Manual whenever you want, and even keyframe parenting and selection points. Since BAO Bones does not require straight arms or legs to rig, you avoid the hard work of preparing and unbending your layers in Photoshop. Thus, you can animate with greater creative freedom and significantly less prep time.
Puppeteer Feature for Complete Character Control
Managing complex rigs can be challenging, but BAO Bones includes a powerful solution. For example, the Puppeteer feature allows you to control many instances of Bones from one single layer. This simplifies the management of entire character rigs, keeping your compositions tidy and lightweight. Consequently, you can focus on animating performances rather than managing layers.
Native Plugin Architecture for Superior Performance
BAO Bones is a native plugin, not a script, which provides significant advantages. For instance, it does not rely on expressions, making it faster and more reliable. Furthermore, it is GPU-accelerated, ensuring incredibly fast performance even with complex projects. Since the plugin is designed for high-speed rendering, you can enjoy a responsive, interactive workflow.
Perfect for Character Animators, Motion Designers, and Video Editors
This plugin is particularly well-suited for character animators who need to create expressive, natural movement quickly. Similarly, motion designers creating explainer videos, commercials, and broadcast graphics will appreciate the streamlined workflow. Additionally, video editors who occasionally need to animate characters will find BAO Bones easy to learn and use. Ultimately, BAO Bones v1.6.0 accelerates your entire character animation workflow.
System Requirements and Compatibility
BAO Bones v1.6.0 supports an extensive range of After Effects versions, spanning from CC 2015 through the latest 2026 releases. The plugin is fully compatible with both Windows and macOS operating systems. The file size is approximately 907 KB.

Testimonials
Just wanted you guys and everyone else who reads this to know this is one of the best, easiest and fastest tool to use for IK… You can set up IK for a single appendage in seconds. Because it’s a plug-in, it’s pretty much self-contain, meaning is doesn’t have all the other supporting IK elements in your timeline like other tools do. This tool has saved probably 20-30 hours of time on a current IK project (and I’ve only had the tool for a month! )
Can’t speak more highly of Bao Bones!!!
I love the fact that, although I am working with a PNG and not a vector, I can see no distortion or blurring on the body parts as I move them, which is amazing! I’ll keep playing with your plugin for a few days and it’s most likely that this will be my Christmas present for this year.
I tried Duik and found it to be more complicated to work with than this one and also own Rubber Hose but it doesn’t give me the same degree of flexibility Bones does (just in case others are wondering why your plugin is better). The movement flows so natural with very little effort!
Anyway, thank you for your fast support and for this awesome plugin!
I’d like to mention how incredibly impressive Bones is. I’ve been using DUIK for awhile now, but this is so much better for the kind of rigging that I do!

How is it different from other rigging tools?
1. Distortion
Duik and other IK rigging tools rely on After Effect’s built-in ‘Puppet tool’ for distortions. The main issue with this is that the mesh from the Puppet Tools is automatic, which means you cannot define it, and of course, cannot change it over time. With Bones, the mesh is defined to fit joint bending, and you can modify it whenever you want. You can even use masks to get very accurate distortions.
2. Bones does not require straight arms or legs to rig
With Bones, you avoid the hard work preparing and unbending your layers in Photoshop.
3. An entirely keyframable workflow
This is the main reason Bones was created. With Bones, you can switch the IK mode from Automatic to Manual whenever you want, you can even keyframe Parenting and Selection points. This means the subtleties of your animation never need to be compromised.
4. Simplicity
Bones was created for an animation feature film, which required the animation of A LOT of characters. Bones makes it super easy to setup and manage many different characters.
5. Less layers
With Bones, you can control a whole character on a single layer without needing any extra nulls or controllers. This keeps compositions tidy and light.
6. Speed
Bones is a native plugin and does not rely on expressions, so it is really fast. Oh, and it is also GPU accelerated, so it is really, really fast!
New Features
New in version 1.5: New module “Bones_overlaps_manager”: Allows defining and animating a ‘Z’ value at start and end of each mesh, just like ‘Puppet Tool’ overlaps.
New in version 1.3: You can add a child to any bone.
New in version 1.4: Scale any part of your IK chain.
Watch tutorial videos on both of these features in the Tutorials section below.
Smooth skinning
Bones gives you the option to use masks to define the distortion mesh to get ultra-smooth skinning without any artifacts.

Pupeteer – Control your entire character on one layer
Pupeteer allows you to control many instances of Bones from one layer.
