drAEw for After Effects
drAEw v1.0.016 for After Effects
The Ultimate In-App Vector Drawing and Frame-by-Frame Animation Tool
Download drAEw v1.0.016 today. Consequently, you can draw, animate, and deploy vector artwork directly inside Adobe After Effects, completely eliminating the need to switch between external sketching applications and your timeline. Because motion designers and storyboard artists frequently need to sketch rough ideas and bring them to life quickly, having a drawing tool that integrates natively into AE is absolutely essential. Nevertheless, the traditional workflow of drawing in one program, exporting, importing, and then animating creates unnecessary friction and lost time. Fortunately, drAEw eliminates this bottleneck completely. Moreover, every stroke you make is instantly converted into editable Shape Layers, giving you complete control over paths, colors, and stroke widths throughout the entire process. In short, you can transform your creative vision into animated reality without ever leaving your composition.
Native Vector Drawing with Editable Shape Layer Output
The core of this script lies in its seamless integration with After Effects’ native architecture. For instance, you can draw directly on the drAEw canvas using intuitive vector brushes, and the resulting artwork is immediately converted into fully editable AE Shape Layers. Furthermore, because everything is generated as vector paths, you can adjust individual points, change colors, modify stroke widths, or apply effects at any stage of your project. Since this approach is entirely non-destructive, you retain complete creative flexibility across multiple revisions. Consequently, your hand-drawn elements become as malleable and reusable as any other shape layer in your composition.
Frame-by-Frame Animation with Onion Skin Control
Professional hand-drawn animation demands precision and rhythm, and drAEw delivers both. For example, the built-in Onion Skin feature allows you to see previous and upcoming frames while drawing, making it significantly easier to understand motion paths and maintain consistency. Additionally, the Frame Duration control lets you precisely set how long each drawing remains visible on the timeline, giving you complete command over the pacing and speed of your animation. Since you can explore rapid frame-by-frame sequences directly within AE, the script is perfectly suited for creating expressive character animation, dynamic visual effects, and rhythmic motion graphics.
Streamlined Storyboarding and Previsualization Workflow
One of drAEw’s most practical applications is its ability to accelerate storyboarding and animatics. For instance, you can sketch camera movements, scene compositions, and animation flow directly inside your composition, then evaluate the rough preview before committing to detailed production. Furthermore, the ability to trace over existing artwork with adjustable opacity makes it easy to refine ideas iteratively. Additionally, visual annotations, callouts, and notes can be layered directly onto your sketches, facilitating clearer communication with clients or team members. Thus, drAEw becomes an invaluable tool for pre-production planning and concept development.
Professional Brush Controls and Real-Time Customization
drAEw is more than a simple drawing tool; it provides a comprehensive suite of controls for refining your artwork. For example, you can customize stroke, fill, and alpha properties in real-time, allowing you to fine-tune your graphics as you work. Additionally, the pressure-sensitive calligraphy brush responds naturally to drawing tablet input, producing lines with authentic, hand-drawn character. The built-in Simplify and Smooth tools further help you clean up rough strokes, ensuring your final artwork maintains a polished appearance. Consequently, your sketches can evolve from rough concepts to production-ready assets within the same workflow.
Flexible Export Options with Auto and Manual Modes
Different projects and stages of production demand different output approaches, and drAEw accommodates both. For instance, Automatic Mode is designed for rapid ideation, sending your drawings directly to the timeline without extra configuration. Alternatively, Manual Mode provides greater control over how artwork is transferred, allowing you to organize and manage your layers with precision. Furthermore, you can choose to export your animation as a single keyframed layer for a clean timeline, or as a stack of individual layers for maximum flexibility in applying effects or editing frames. Consequently, drAEw adapts to your preferred working style at every stage of the creative process.
Perfect for Motion Designers, Animators, and Storyboard Artists
This script is particularly well-suited for motion designers who need to create hand-drawn elements, animated arrows, and custom graphics without leaving After Effects. Similarly, animators working on frame-by-frame sequences will appreciate the seamless integration of drawing and timeline tools. Additionally, storyboard artists and concept creators will find the rapid sketching and annotation capabilities invaluable for previsualization and client presentations. Ultimately, drAEw v1.0.016 accelerates your entire creative and pre-production pipeline.

Frame Duration in drAEw
Timing is everything in animation , and with drAEw, the Frame Duration slider gives you direct control over how long each drawing stays visible in your timeline. This slider defines the number of frames each canvas will hold once pushed into After Effects.
Opacity Slider
The Opacity Slider controls the transparency of the canvas layers inside drAEw.Itโs especially useful when onion skinning, letting you trace over previous drawings without losing clarity. It also helps when working over reference images or footage, allowing you to lower the opacity and focus on your next frame with precision.
Export Options
Stack of Layers vs. Single Keyframed Layer When sending your drawings to After Effects, drAEw gives you two export modes, each suited to a different workflow:
Stack of Layers Each canvas is pushed as a separate shape layer, with its own position in time based on the defined frame duration. Perfect for granular editing, custom layer styling, and timeline control.
Single Keyframed Layer All canvases are combined into one shape layer, with a new keyframe at each drawing. Ideal when you want to keep your timeline clean and focused.
06/28/2026-> New: Navigate between your frames in your Canvas to adjust and edit!
06/28/2026-> New: Vectors Extractor:
After Effects 2026 can import an SVG, but it has no built-in way to take a frame you already have in a comp, turn it into editable vector shapes, tweak how that trace looks, and drop the result back onto the timeline as layers. Now you have DrAEw !
- 1. Grab a frame.
- 2. Click “Vectorize”.
- 3. Adjust : A panel of sliders controls the trace. Change a value, vectorise again, compare. Your settings are remembered between sessions.
- 4. Draw or edit on the canvas if you want to add to the trace by hand.
- 5. Send to After Effects the layer or a Sequence.
- 6. Export your SVGs from After Effects!
“Vectors Options” controls
– Colors (2 to 256, default 4): palette size. Few colours suit flat, graphic art; SVG stays fast, so high counts are fine when you need them.
– Edge smoothing: pre-blur before tracing. This is the main control for rounding off jagged, square edges.
– Curve smoothness: how loosely curves are fitted over the pixel steps. Higher reads smoother.
– Straight-line tolerance: merges small steps into longer straight runs.
– Suppress small shapes: drops tiny noise paths below a pixel size.
– Color accuracy passes: more colour-clustering passes bring the palette closer to the source.
– Sharpen right-angle corners: leave off for rounder shapes, turn on when you want crisp 90-degree corners.
– Rounder by default. Out of the box, the trace favours smooth edges (edge smoothing on, corner sharpening off). Dial it back if you want it tighter to the pixels.
– SVG Import needs After Effects 2026 or newer, where SVGs come in as native, editable shape layers. On earlier versions, use “Data Import”.
– Colours look vivid, not washed out. The tracer’s palette is saturation-corrected so flat fills keep their punch.
– You can also export the current canvas straight to an .svg file for use outside AE.
